You already know you're supposed to "compare car insurance." Every billboard, every ad break, every renewal-shock conversation ends there. What nobody explains is how to do it so the comparison actually means something — because collecting three website quotes with three different sets of default coverages isn't comparing insurance. It's comparing apples to rumors of fruit.

This page is the how. Why comparison genuinely pays in Texas right now, the one rule that separates a real comparison from a fake one, and the exact five-minute process we run for Texas drivers every day — ending in real prices from four carriers, including the largest auto insurer in the state, and a recommendation we'll defend even when it's "don't switch."

Why comparing wins in Texas — especially right now

The short answer: Carriers disagree about you on purpose, the market just flattened after a historic spike, and a third of it can't be shopped without legwork. Method beats luck.

Three facts make Texas a comparison-shopper's market:

Carriers genuinely disagree. Each company prices your record, ZIP, vehicles, mileage, credit-based insurance score and household through its own model, tuned to its own claims history and appetite. The same household at identical limits routinely comes back hundreds of dollars apart across four quotes — and the spread widens with every complication: a teen, a ticket, a lapse, an unusual vehicle. Whatever your profile, some carrier currently wants it more than the others do. Comparison is simply how you find out which.

The timing is unusually good. Per TDI's rate filing data, Texas auto rates spiked 23.8% in 2022, then settled to 4.8% in 2024 and 0.9% in 2025. Flat, profitable markets are when carriers compete for good drivers — and when a renewal that compounded through the spike years quietly drifts above what a fresh quote would charge. If you haven't compared since 2023, you're overdue by exactly one market cycle.

Part of the market takes extra work to see. TDI's market data shows the four biggest auto groups in Texas write roughly 59% of the premium — and two of them, State Farm and Allstate, are captive: no independent agency can quote them. The other two, Progressive (the state's largest, at 21.08%) and GEICO (invitation-only in the agency channel), we hold appointments with. One request to us covers a meaningful slice of the real price competition; our statewide guide maps the whole field if you want it.

The identical-limits rule — what separates real comparisons from fake ones

The short answer: Match liability, UM/UIM, PIP, deductibles and endorsements across every quote, or the cheapest number is just the thinnest policy.

Here's how most DIY comparisons quietly go wrong. Website A defaults to 50/100/50 liability with UM/UIM included. Website B defaults to 30/60/25 with UM/UIM waived and a $2,000 deductible. Website B "wins" by $34 a month — and the shopper never learns they compared two different products, or that the saving was manufactured by removing the coverage most likely to matter. In Texas, where UM/UIM comes off a policy only by written rejection and PIP must be offered, cheap online quotes are often cheap precisely because of what got signed away in the checkout flow.

So the rule, in full: a comparison counts only when every quote carries the same liability limits, the same UM/UIM at the same limits, the same PIP, the same comprehensive and collision deductibles, and the same endorsements. Fix the coverage first — sized to your life, not to a website's defaults — then let the carriers fight over the price of that exact policy. A difference that survives matched coverage is real money. A difference that doesn't was never savings at all.

The 60-second dec-page check. Before comparing anything, pull your current declarations page and read four lines: liability limits, UM/UIM, PIP, deductibles. That's your baseline. Every quote gets matched to it — or consciously upgraded from it, which is a fine moment to fix limits that were never right. If you'd rather we do the reading, a photo of that page is genuinely the fastest way to start.

The 5-minute process, step by step

The short answer: ZIP and a few details in, four matched quotes and a straight recommendation out. Most of the five minutes is you deciding what's for dinner.

Minute one: the basics. Start with your ZIP code in any form on this page, or call (832) 703-1289. We'll need drivers, vehicles, and your current coverage — and the fastest version of all three is a photo of your declarations page, texted or emailed. That single document answers twenty questions at once.

Minutes two through four: our side. A licensed Texas agent — not a call center, not a lead router — quotes your household across Geico, Progressive, Liberty Mutual and Safeco at identical limits, deductibles and endorsements, applying every discount you qualify for: good student, driver training, telematics, paid-in-full, multi-policy and the rest. If your current limits deserve an upgrade, we'll quote that too, priced side by side so the decision is yours with numbers attached.

Minute five: the answer. You get the four prices, what each one includes, and our honest read on which wins for your household — including, regularly, "your current policy beats all four; keep it." No purchase required for the answer. No follow-up campaign if the answer is no. The quote is the product, and it's free.

Here's exactly how we run this comparison, so you can trust it. Reviewed September 2, 2026. Watson Insurance is an independent brokerage in Friendswood, Texas, appointed with Geico, Progressive, Liberty Mutual and Safeco — confirmed current for auto coverage as of this review date. We are not appointed with every carrier in Texas; companies mentioned for market context, including State Farm, Allstate and USAA, are editorial-only and can't be quoted or bound through us. Every comparison we run uses identical limits, deductibles and endorsements across all four carriers, so a price difference is a price difference and not a thinner policy. We weigh coverage adequacy first, claims and financial strength second, price third, and we publish no sample premiums — your quote is your number, and nobody else's. Any "winner" we name is the winner for your household in that comparison, never a universal ranking. Appointments, appetite and pricing change constantly; we re-verify before every quote. Your premium and eligibility will differ from anyone else's.

Who we compare — and who we'll honestly send you to check

The short answer: Four carriers spanning the market's styles — plus a straight answer about the ones we can't quote.

The lineup covers the spectrum deliberately. Progressive — the largest auto insurer in Texas, strongest where households get complicated, and the market's deepest specialty-vehicle writer. GEICO — the direct-sale efficiency machine, often sharpest on clean records, reachable through us because its invitation-only agency program includes Watson. Liberty Mutual and Safeco — agency-channel carriers that win a healthy share of our four-way comparisons precisely when the famous names don't. Head-to-head curious? Our GEICO vs. Progressive breakdown goes deep on the two biggest.

And the ones we can't quote, said plainly: State Farm and Allstate sell through captive agents only — if you want their numbers in your comparison, bring your matched dec page to them and they'll price the same coverage. USAA is membership-only; if you're military-eligible, check them alongside us, because they're genuinely competitive and we'd rather you know than wonder. An honest comparison includes its own blind spots — ours are those three, and now you know exactly how to cover them.

What happens after — switching, timing, and the no-spam pledge

The short answer: Switch same-day if you want, mid-term is fine with a pro-rata refund, never let coverage gap — and your inbox stays quiet either way.

If a quote wins: we can typically bind the new policy the same day, timed so the new coverage starts before the old one ends — continuous coverage protects your future pricing, so we never let a gap open in a switch. Mid-policy switches are routine: Texas personal auto policies refund unused premium pro-rata when you cancel (check your policy for any small fee, but most carriers charge none), so "I just renewed" is not a reason to overpay for six more months. We handle the cancellation paperwork with your old carrier so nothing falls between chairs.

If nothing wins: you keep your policy, you keep the comparison as a benchmark, and we mark our calendar, not yours. No drip campaign, no weekly "just checking in!" Our entire marketing strategy is being useful and then shutting up — it's how a Friendswood agency gets to 5.0 stars across 135+ reviews.

Either way: your information goes to exactly one place — us, for quoting. We are not a lead-generation site; nobody buys your phone number from this page. The comparison sites can't say that, which is worth remembering about their "free quotes."

That's the whole system. Five minutes, four carriers, identical limits, straight answer, quiet inbox. The only step we can't do is the first one — that's the ZIP box below, or (832) 703-1289, or a photo of your dec page. Whenever you're ready.
